Our previous post had us talking about the biodiversity of Himachal and around our
resort in Himachal Pradesh. With over 1200 birds, 70 mammals and tens of thousands of species of flora, there’s everything that a nature lover would love nestled among these hills that we call home.
What if you wanted to get up close with such vast biodiversity? As it turns out, there are several wildlife sanctuaries and biosphere reserves that are not very far away from our resort in Himachal Pradesh. Here’s a short guide on the numerous wildlife reserves in Himachal.
Great Himalayan National Park:
The largest of the national parks in Himachal, the Great Himalayan National Park was founded in 1984. The GHNP is unique in that it represents flora and fauna of two distinct regions; both West Asian and Central Asian biodiversity can be found here. It is spread across a massive 1171 sq km and contains some of the finest specimens of large cedar and pine trees in the region, having been untouched for so long. Horse Chestnut trees can also be found here, providing a source of food to both people and the animals that live here! Speaking of which, there are over 70 species of mammals and 375 species of birds found just here! The blue sheep or bharal, hangul or kashmiri stag, the rare and endangered snow leopard, Himalayan Black Bear and other large mammals are found here.
